Duties of an Acting Chancellor
Role of an Acting Chancellor
Acting Chancellors serve in a temporary role to bring continuity to campus operations between outgoing leaders and their successors.
According to the UC Office of the President, acting chancellors have the same authority and responsibilities as permanent chancellors. These are outlined below:
Authority and Responsibility

- The Chancellor of a campus will be consulted about any university-wide activities conducted at that campus.
- The Chancellor has administrative authority within the budgeted items for a campus in accordance with University of California policies determined by the UC President.
- The Chancellor is responsible for the organization and operation of the campus, its internal administration, and its discipline.
- Decisions made by the Chancellor in accordance with the provisions of the budget and with policies established by the UC Board of Regents or the UC President are final.
- The Chancellor of each campus nominates officers, faculty members, and other employees on that campus in accordance with the provisions of these Standing Orders.
Standing Orders
- The Chancellor on each campus appoints all the members of the instructional staff needed for instruction in any summer session on that campus, and may fix their pay in accordance with the provisions of the UC Board of Regents' budget and of the salary scales of the university.
- The Chancellor of each campus leads all formal functions on that campus.
- At formal exercises and ceremonies attended by the UC President, the Chancellor shall introduce the President in accordance with the university's rules for protocol and procedure.
- The Chancellor, with the approval of the UC President, may replace or supplement formal exercises on the campus, including Commencement exercises, with informal functions at which Vice Chancellors, Provosts, or Deans may preside.
