Choosing a Chancellor
The University of California Policy on the Appointment of Chancellors
UC Governance
The president of the University of California system shares governance with the faculty and the 26-member Board of Regents. Each of the system's 10 campuses is led by a chancellor who shares governance with the campus faculty senate.
The Policy in Brief
Forming the Committee
When a vacancy occurs or is imminent, a joint regents-faculty committee is formed to advise the UC president. The committee consists of
- Five (5) regents appointed by the chairman of the Board of Regents
- Five (5) faculty members appointed by the UC president from a panel submitted by the campus Academic Senate Committee on Committees and from the chairman of the Board of Regents and the president of the UC
- One graduate and one undergraduate student appointed by the respective graduate and undergraduate student associations of the campus
- One alumni representative appointed by the alumni association of the campus
- One staff employee of the campus is invited to attend all meetings of the committee with full participation in discussion and debate. The staff employee is selected in accordance with procedures established by the UC president
The President of the University will convene the committee.
The Process
- The UC President submits a list of promising candidates — from five to 15 names — to the committee
- The committee evaluates the nominations and can add more names
- The committee may interview the candidates
- The committee then seeks the opinions of other key groups within and outside the university
- Both the committee and the president should be mindful of the university's commitment to hiring women and underrepresented minorities
- After the committee completes its evaluations and advises the president of the UC, the president will make his recommendation to the Board of Regents for consideration and approval
