MEMBERS OF THE UC RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY
Dear Friends:
As you know, France Córdova shortly will be leaving her position as Chancellor of UC Riverside to become President of Purdue University. While I greatly regret the fact that we are losing France's leadership, I am a great admirer of her and of what she has accomplished along with the UC Riverside community over the last several years. UC Riverside is on a strong upward trajectory, and we owe a debt of thanks to France for her many contributions.
We will be launching a national search for a permanent successor to Chancellor Córdova. I am writing today to let you know that, in the meantime, I have appointed Robert D. Grey as Acting Chancellor of the campus. Many of you know Bob from his service as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor for Health Affairs, in which capacity he has served as a consultant to UC Riverside in planning the School of Medicine. Bob has a long history with the UC system, having served for eight years as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at UC Davis, ending in 2001, and prior to that as Dean of UC Davis' Division of Biological Sciences.
A professor emeritus of cellular and molecular biology, Bob graduated from Phillips University in Oklahoma and received his doctoral degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he taught and conducted research before joining the UC Davis faculty in 1967. He is the recipient of numerous awards and has consulted with many universities on academic and administrative issues. The strength of his leadership background, his knowledge of the University of California, and his understanding of the key issues pertinent to UC Riverside make him an excellent candidate to serve as Acting Chancellor.
Bob will begin work on June 29. I know that, working with Executive Vice Chancellor Ellen Wartella and the rest of the existing leadership team, Bob will provide superb leadership for the campus and will continue moving forward the key initiatives launched by Chancellor Córdova. Please join me in welcoming him.
Sincerely,
Robert C. Dynes
President
This is the first step in the transition from Chancellor France Córdova, who left UCR on July 1 to assume the presidency of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
An acting chancellor in the 10-campus University of California retains the authority and responsibilities of a permanent chief executive at the campus level.
