Multicultural Families and Adolescents Study

Studying a Parent’s Influence

UC Riverside researchers are examining the impact of parenting behavior on a child’s school performance by surveying Southern California adolescents from a broad spectrum of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Multicultural Families and Adolescents Study

Our Multicultural Families and Adolescents Study is shedding light on the degree to which parents affect their children’s school performance and how parental behavior protects youth from depression and delinquency.

Researchers are asking adolescents salient questions: How controlling or warm are your parents? How involved are they in your schooling? What is your relationship like with your mother and father? UCR researchers are also talking to parents, interviewing 400 Chinese-Americans, 400 Filipino-Americans, 400 Korean-Americans and 400 European-Americans.

The study will examine the degree to which parents influence their children’s school achievements and behavioral adjustments and will investigate whether the effects differ across ethnic groups or generational status, especially for Chinese, Filipino, and Korean immigrants.
