Track & Field Teams Compete In Big West Championships
This Weekend
(May 15, 2008) – The UC Riverside Men's and Women's
Track &Field Teams travel to Cal State Northridge this
weekend for the Big West Championships. Three time Big West
Track Athlete of the Week Brenda Martinez
is expected to lead the Highlanders to an upper division finish
on the women's side.

Alvidrez,
Named All-West Region
(May 14, 2008) – Sophomore DP/P Marissa Alvidrez was
named to the All-West Region Second Team Wednesday afternoon,
one day after she and teammate Chrisitn Songer earned Big
West All-Conference honors. Alvidrez continues to collect
accolades after a season that saw her pace the Big West in
batting average (.424) and slugging percentage (.722) while
finishing second in on base percentage (.517) and OPS (1.239)
and third in homeruns (11).

Highlanders Hit The Road To Face UCSB For A Chance to Move
into Tie For First-Place
(May 15, 2008) – UCR wraps up their 2008 road schedule
with a critical three-game conference series at UC Santa Barbara.
After taking two of three from UC Davis over the weekend,
UCR continues to hold onto second place in conference standings.
The Highlanders can move into a tie for first place with Cal
State Fullerton who owns a three game lead in the win column,
having played three more conference games that UCR at this
point. Drew Garcia continues to lead the team in hitting with
a .349 clip.

Elvin Tabah Qualifies For Regionals In High Jump
(May 10, 2008) – Junior high jumper Elvin Tabah qualified
for Regionals in the event on Saturday with a personal best
jump of 6' 10 3/4" (2.10m) at the OXY Invitational. That
mark is the third highest jump in the Big West this season.

Masi Inducted Into Riverside Sport Hall of Fame
(May 6, 2008) – Former UC Riverside men's basketball coach and athletics director
John Masi was officially inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame on May 5, 2008
in a banquet held at the Riverside Convention Center.
Masi moved with his family to Riverside in 1956 at the age of eight and went on to star
at Riverside Ramona High, Riverside Community College and UC Riverside. He graduated
from UCR in 1971 with a degree in economics. Masi began his coaching career in 1972
overseeing the Highlanders freshmen squad before joining Notre Dame High School as
its head basketball coach and athletics director.
He returned to UCR as an assistant coach in 1975 and was named head coach in 1979.
In his first year at the Highlanders helm, Masi guided the team to a 23-5 record
and Regional Championship. Over the next 17 seasons, UC Riverside received 10 NCAA
Division II Tournament bids finishing as high as second during the 1994-95 season.
From 1992 to 1999, Masi also served as the Highlanders director of athletics. Masi's
career record in 26 years at UCR is 462-269, and he remains the winningest coach in Highlanders history.

To Host UC Riverside Elite Basketball Camp
(May
2, 2008) - The UC Riverside Elite Basketball Camp, being held
on Thursday, June 19, is bringing together the best that the
Southern California high school basketball community has to
offer. The exclusive camp, hosted at the UC Riverside Student
Rec Center, will include both skill development and high-intensity
games that will allow top area student-athletes to showcase
their talents to Division I coaches.
"Reaching out to the Southern California basketball community
is important to Highlander basketball." said Head Men's
Basketball Coach Jim Wooldridge. "We're anxious not only
to work with a talented group of young men who represent the
future of basketball in our area, but to highlight the positive
changes surrounding our basketball program and showcase this
outstanding University." |

Athletics Opens Photo Site (Sept.
17, 2007) -The UC Riverside Athletics Media Relations Office,
in partnership with Digipixart, is happy to announce the opening
of its new photo website, where Highlander family and friends
can order photos of their favorite UCR Student-Athletes. Men's
and women's soccer are the first teams featured on the site,
with more teams and photos to come over the course of the season. |
